Our Roots are in the Internet and Online Systems

In the mid-1990s this same group that started SMARTFORCE, which is now part of ABILITY Network, founded RedEnvelope (NASDAQ: REDE), an online e-commerce and catalog company that went public in 2002 (that was a good thing). Building that company taught us a lot about creating web-based systems and keeping them running day in and day out... and we've been doing that for about 20 years.

In early 2000 we started a company to address the nursing labor shortage, specifically the problems found in large hospital systems. Out of this complex and dynamic staffing environment, we pioneered a concept called Open Shift Management (OSM), which allowed employees to successfully collaborate online with managers to fill open shifts.

Today we are part of ABILITY Network, a leading information technology company. Together we are guided by a singular mission: Help providers of all sizes, at all sites of care simplify the administrative and clinical complexity of healthcare. We are Pioneers in Software as a Service (SaaS)

We offered this OSM product using the Software as a Service (SaaS) model, where the customer doesn't buy the software or have to incur the enormous costs of hardware and IT people, or maintenance. Instead, we run the software and the customer just uses it for a monthly fee via any web-browser, anywhere, anytime. It was a novel concept at the time... now its the future of software. Who knows how to run the software better than the people who BUILT it, right?

Changing Healthcare Staff Scheduling for the Better

So, while revolutionizing healthcare staffing over the last decade, we spent a lot of time looking at scheduling software, walking the halls talking to nurses and managers. We quickly realized that the software available to healthcare (and many other industries) was very expensive, overly complicated and was only really used in large enterprises. There was no full-featured staff scheduling solution available for small to mid-sized companies that combined scheduling and OSM at an affordable price.

More importantly to us, NONE of the solutions out there (for any industry) were aimed at helping MANAGERS with the daily fire-fight of staffing open shifts (something we know a lot about). If anything the expensive scheduling systems typically created more work for the managers, since they usually filled shifts off-line with sign up sheets and spreadsheets, made lots of phone calls, and then re-entered it into the scheduler. Managers have become scheduling secretaries, and we thought it made a lot of sense to build a product to reduce the busy work and let that higher priced talent get back to MANAGING.

So with SMARTFORCE, we saw an opportunity to create a scheduling solution for MANAGERS that would be simple and straightforward, and at the same time provide the information they need to make better decisions in real-time... while ALSO letting their staff collaborate with them online to keep staffing levels at a maximum, and take care of many scheduling chores themselves (OSM). The STAFF also benefits from real-time information flow and increased flexibility. Shift swaps, time-off requests, and the filling of open shifts can be done anytime, anywhere there is a web-browser, and manager approval is quickly communicated back via email and text message.

There is no better team on the planet that understands online software, the complexities of manager staffing, and how to create and continually improve the web-based features they and their staff need for effective workforce management. Period.
